woodcuts and engravings

In the early twentieth century, several artists in Europe and specifically in Belgium developed a unique expressionist aesthetic in the graphic arts in a genre that was called ‘novel in woodcuts’. For these novels were used woodcuts, engravings and lithographs. One of originator of the woodcut novel was Frans Masereel, the Belgian artist who illustrated editions of works by Belgian writers as Emile Verhaeren. To quote Frans masereel : "Carving images into wood or linoleum and transferring the image onto a canvas is known as xylography and is the oldest known method of relief printmaking. The artists of this genre create beauty and meaning using the spaces in between, carving images of strength and vigor, movement and contrast, all by what they leave behind." Traeghe Genuine Arts has a collection of 20thcentury and contemporary graphic artists ; Masereel, Minne,  Alphonse Mora , Jan Wellens, Carl Bianga ,  Marc Mendelson and many others.
